Why do I need a nation run by regional mobsters who are in cahoots with other nations who all seek to keep us afraid of each other?
You say, "It elevates money to a thing to be pursued for its own sake..." Not exactly. Usury elevates the psychopaths who control the energy accounting token to make more energy accounting tokens. But even without it, People defrauded, stole, sabotaged, extorted, tortured and killed for gold.
Thing is, it is an archaic practice, accounting for Our energy added. Already, 80% of Us and more work at jobs that merely move money. Cashiers, sales, accounting, advertising, marketing, bill collecting, tax collecting, insurance, casinos, Wall Street, banking, and more. These do not serve a needed function at all except to serve the Ones who are running the financial mess on Our planet, and who presently own virtually all the "precious" metals here on Earth.
And They can make those "precious" metals the next fiat - They transmuted lead to gold in the 1970's with LOTS of energy, and I know - as on KNOW - that We have free energy tech... And 50 years later in research and development, I imagine They will create the gold They need to buy all the needed Ones, and needed things, to implement Their plans for Earth.
So... I will keep saying that the solution to the moneyed psychopaths in control is to get free energy tech out in the open and strip those psychopaths of Their energy-accounting tool by removing any point to its function.
I believe, but I may be mistaken, that the energy-accounting function of money mentioned in this article is in accounting for yours/mine/others energy (i.e. efforts and skills and labor) not really the joules involved.

No, it does not specifically break down the energy into any unit but time. Effort over time, and is a rather arbitrary valuing of that time/effort. Some People's energy is worth more than Others.
Their greater fear is people who will not engage on either end of usury. I suppose they only fear the people who still manage to live good or better lives without usury, not the campers/rough sleepers.
"Usury was banned for centuries by Christianity" is a joke. Big RC Church-ism just collected tribute from their vassal lands - every western & central European monarchy & their holdings in a feudal system - and its biggies (Bishops, Cardinals and such) were OF the Aristocracy for centuries. They didn't need usury, but would call it something else if they so wished, like the dark-age equivalent of "Management Fees".

No I think their greatest fear is exposure because that would lead people to work and/or not comply together.
People working and/or not complying and doing that in isolation is much easier for them to control.
