On a related note, I have noticed that each morning when I open Protonmail there is a small red box warning at the bottom of the screen that (only briefly, for a few seconds) says 'Message does not exist'. So I think Protonmail may be filtering messages out; some of my subscriptions indeed do not arrive when I compare them to the authors' output. When I contacted Protonmail about it they of course made a show of addressing the concern but in actuality did not admit this might be the case.
I have had great success with Substack, but all of a sudden, my views went down about 300 per post---I do not receive my own posts in my own email right now and I am wondering how many other people don't get it? The email doesn't go in junk, or trash, it just doesn't come at all to me. So far, I think the plusses definitely outweigh the minuses.
I’ve been looking into a federated alternative to Substack, without success so far.
I would love to dive into making a Substack-like app based on Elixir, which is a programming language extending Erlang, which was created by Ericsson to be a fault tolerant multi processing language for telephone exchanges, and maybe the Phoenix web framework for an API and with Stripe for payments, but my programming skills are meager and have unfortunately eroded and I'm not so young anymore, so unless someone comes along to help with that it probably won't happen.
I did put out a more general message on a Fediverse developer chat thread about looking for a federated Substack alternative but haven't heard anything yet.
But it seems that Wordpress can do many of the same things as Substack, although it takes some effort and skill to administer, and WP does have an ActivityPub plugin so it could be federated with Mastodon or Pleroma or other WordPress installations.
I think you put your finger on the reason Substack is still a very popular forum - the great authors and their content.

If you find that alternative, let us know, or let us know how we can build one together. Thanks.
Absolutely. Calling all Federators!
